Unable to watch patients with blood disorder suffering in silence, after affirming that bone marrow transfer can save lives without harming the donor, Dharma Master Cheng Yen started the Tzu Chi Marrow Donor Registry, which rename to Buddhist Tzu Chi Stem Cell Centre on 30 April 2002.
To promote registry of Marrow Donors as well as awareness of World Marrow Donor Day, there are several activities among Taiwan. Tzu-Chi volunteers from around the island wide will hold activities within their communities from North to South of Taiwan.
To create awareness among the general public and decision-makers about being a stem cell donor, at the same time, to clarify some misconceptions about bone marrow donation such as bone marrow comes from the spinal cord and that donating would jeopardize their health, Tzu-Chi volunteers organise programs and invite blood stem cell donors, combine entertainment with knowledge of marrow donation elaborately. Those invited donors will come to show up to speak out how they become a cell donor and share their experiences.

證嚴上人不捨血液相關疾病患者，求救無門, 幾經思考推動骨髓捐贈，讓病患振奮生命有了希望，待證嚴上人確認「救人一命，無損己身」後，「慈濟基金會骨髓捐贈資料中心」終於在一九九三年十月正式成立，全體慈濟人也同時展開全台造血幹細胞捐贈驗血活動。
為了推廣骨髓捐贈驗血活動以及廣宣世界骨髓捐贈者日，台灣各地的慈濟志工在各地展開活動從南到北地開花。
我們為了增進社會大眾對骨髓捐贈的認知以及澄清一些像是抽龍骨水之類或是骨捐是大手術等等錯誤的認知，慈濟志工寓教於樂，給合各項活動與宣傳，並請捐髓者來到活動現場，真人實證，大聲說出『我捐髓過，我很健康』並分享他們的捐髓過程。
